What Teacher Maternity Leave Actually Looks Like & How to Navigate it
For all of you mamas, soon to be mamas, or anyone who hopes to start a family of their own one day, here’s a little bit about my FIRST fully planned teacher maternity leave. You’re not going to believe this, but I only took my first teacher maternity leave with my fourth child (that’s right, child number FOUR). I’d never taken maternity leave for a teacher before then because…well…I was a slave to my job. Friend, I don’t want this to be you. So today, I want to share what I’ve learned after 3 failed maternity leaves and what I’m doing this time to make it better. By the time you’re reading this, my very own baby number 5 should be here! And, regardless if you’re a teacher, a CEO Teacher, or somewhere in between, there’s something here for everyone.
Your Teacher Maternity Leave Checklist Revealed
I want to be real — teacher maternity leave is very different than most jobs. I’ve had students ask me before, “do teachers get maternity leave?” Well, yes, but it requires a lot more work and preparation. It’s not as easy as, ok guys – see y’all in 6-8 weeks! I hope it works out! Instead, you’ve got an entire room of students, other teachers, parents, and administrators wondering, “how long is this teacher maternity leave going to last and did she write a teacher maternity leave letter?” among many other things. Also, even after I left the classroom, I launched my first course 2 months before my most recent baby was born and, although I said I was on maternity leave, I wasn’t. I was working around the clock on my laptop to help students. I didn’t set myself up for success. So this time, I have vowed to make sure my hiney sits in that rocking chair for a million miles so I can enjoy every. Single. Second.
