Teaching phonics is always more fun with games for long vowel word families. My students have struggled with the concept of long vowel word families before, but since introducing these 5 phonics games, they have been better than ever.
My first game for long vowel word families is one for everyone to enjoy. Phonics for kids should be relevant and rigorous while still fun! Essentially, these are phonics worksheets that break apart beginning sounds from their long vowel word family. Students will find words that match the phonics photo card. Students will grab the beginning sound from the fun word game and place it next to the long vowel word family. In the photo below you can see how to set up your notebooks for phonics flexible grouping. I use Velcro dots so my students can stick pieces they choose.
For our next game, create a list of long vowel words to help students who may need extra assistance during this game. A list of long vowel word family words included in the packet can be found at the beginning of this resource. Teaching vowel sounds by creating a center for dramatic play is a great way to incorporate vowel activities for kindergarten or 1st grade. All of the games in this bundle are played the same way. Students will match the beginning sound or blend to the correct long vowel word family. Next, they will attach the photograph that demonstrates the word.
This one is sure to be a hit! Phonics games that come with a sweet treat are so much easier than phonics activities without, right? Make sure today’s lesson is extra sweet by playing this phonics game for kids with your students at flexible grouping and giving them each a doughnut after they have finished their small phonics flashcards. It’s a win-win! Remind students that long vowel sounds say their name.
To be honest, I believe in interactive phonics games over any other method. Having students touch and feel each beginning sound, every photograph, and apply their knowledge beats any phonics game online. Use this “vet check” phonics fun for your students that are animal lovers. I did two long vowel word families to a page on this game, but feel free to cut them in half if you wish.
Last, but not least, is another dramatic play option for your students.
The same phonics flashcards are included with this game but have your students pretend they are grocery shopping for phonics photographs and sounds. If you have a grocery store dramatic play area in your class, use this as a center.
