Take Sight Words outside this summer and play games with your students. Once the summer months get here, if you’re anything like me, you’re scrambling to find something fun to do outdoors. My students and my children at home thrive on living life outside as much as possible. I loved the idea of learning outside so much that I wanted to create a fun game for my Kindergartner to learn sight words without it seeming like another summer chore.
Sight words are tough for 5 & 6 year olds. Sometimes I think they are even tougher on the parents. We work hard and the last thing on our mind when we get home is sight words! Hahahaha! Have no fear, this game is bound to make your life easier and if you keep reading I’ve included a fun freebie to go with it!
This game is something my boys like to do, but I always tell them not to because at the zoo during a butterfly learning lesson the zoo keeper told us that if you touch a butterfly it could damage their wings and make it difficult for them to fly. Nevertheless, my boys still wanted to do it! (Tell them not to and they will find a way! Hahahaha!) Zookeeper – 0 my kids – 1.
In the end, I decided to take allllllll 1,000 Fry Sight Words and turn them into a butterfly catching game.

Print out cards and laminate them to make life a little bit easier when reusing.
Place double sided tape on the back of all the cards.
Tell your kids or your students to hang out outside while you go hide the butterflies.
Place butterflies on playground all over the place! If you don’t have a playground you can use anything in nature.
Release the hounds! Hahahaha! Tell your children that they must explore outside to catch all the butterflies they can. The only catch is they MUST know the word and be able to say it. I like to give my boys a book and their accountability sheet. They also must write the word down on their sheet. Click on the pink text above the accountability sheet to download the PDF.
Tally up the butterflies and go find all the butterflies left undiscovered. Go over the words they don’t know and save those cards for the next game.

With havin so much content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My website has a lot of unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any methods to help stop content from being stolen? I’d definitely appreciate it.
